HR Essential Series: Record Keeping

A disgruntled employee has filed a charge with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission alleging employment discrimination. The investigator calls and informs you that she would like to conduct an onsite visit to review your personnel files. The visit is in four days. Are you ready? You will learn what hiring records you need to keep, how to manage payroll records, what should and should not be kept in personnel files, and what safety records must be maintained at our next briefing.

  • How long do I have to keep resumes and applications?
  • Will I be penalized for not keeping payroll records?
  • What types of information should I keep in employees’ personnel files?
  • What are OSHA’s recordkeeping requirements?

Presenter: John A. Onorato, Esq., SPHR
Attorney Onorato is vice president/general counsel at the Manufacturers’ Association. Previously, he was an assistant professor of business administration at Gannon University where he taught Human Resource Management. He also served as Erie County solicitor and chief of staff for state Senator Jane Earll. Onorato earned his bachelor’s degree andMBA from Gannon University and is a graduate of the Dickinson School of Law.

The Recordkeeping course is part of the HR Essential Certification Series. Other courses include Job Descriptions, Compensation Programs, Interviewing and Hiring and Terminations. Certification requires completion of all five courses within a 12-month period. All courses are offered at least twice a year.
