Where Business Leaders Meet
Topic: Creating Champions: A Commitment for Change Guest: Dr. James Barker

“Creating today a better tomorrow – one child at a time” is the philosophy of the City of Erie School District. Superintendent Dr. James Barker is in his 14th year as the leader of a school district with 12,500 students, 1,400 staff members and a $124 million budget. In addition, the physical plant consists of 23 schools located within 21 buildings.
The GE Foundation recently awarded the school district a grant for $15 million. This award, the largest non-government grant ever awarded to a Pennsylvania public school district, will be used to improve student achievement and increase college readiness through a comprehensive school, business and community collaboration.
